Home Standby Generator Fuel Cost: Build a Local Estimate

Standby fuel cost: Rate — Fuel use per hour; Price — Local fuel tariff; Hours — Outage scenario
Estimate standby-generator fuel cost from the exact model, load, consumption units, operating hours, and local tariff, with clearly labeled illustrative arithmetic.
☷   Table of Contents

Estimate standby-generator fuel cost with the exact model’s consumption data and your local fuel tariff. Keep fuel, consumption units, load percentage, and operating hours visible. A national dollar estimate without those inputs may not describe your installation.

    Find the right specification

Record the generator model and whether the estimate uses natural gas or liquid propane. As one model-specific example, Generac lists 291 cubic feet per hour of natural gas at 100% load for model 72610, its 24kW cellular standby generator. This is not a consumption figure for every 24kW generator. Source: official model specifications.

    Use consistent units

For a hypothetical generator consuming 2 gallons per hour at a specified load and a hypothetical delivered fuel price of $3 per gallon, fuel alone would cost $6 per hour. Ten operating hours under those hypothetical constant conditions would cost $60. These numbers demonstrate the arithmetic; they are not a quote, measured consumption, or current local price.

For natural gas, ask your utility how the manufacturer’s consumption unit relates to the billing unit and which applicable charges belong in the estimate. Do not multiply cubic feet directly by a price expressed in another unit.

    Build more than one scenario

    ScenarioInputs to record
Short outageHours, estimated load, applicable consumption
Long outageHours, changing loads, available fuel
Routine exerciseManual schedule and consumption information
Fuel deliverySupplier fees and replenishment conditions

    Label uncertainty

If your available specification gives only full-load consumption, label an estimate using it as a full-load scenario. Do not present it as the household’s measured average. Ask the dealer for the most appropriate published data for the loads you intend to support. Note the fuel-price date and update the sheet when your tariff or supplier quote changes.

    Keep ownership costs separate

Track maintenance, installation, financing, and other costs in their own rows. Fuel expense alone is not the total cost of owning backup power. Separating these categories makes the comparison easier to review and prevents a fuel-only figure from being mistaken for a complete operating budget.

Can I get an exact monthly cost without usage?

This article cannot verify one. Specify operating hours, consumption, and applicable fuel prices first.
